Over the past two weeks, we worked with Tommy van Auken to learn and practice the underlying fundamentals of figure drawing. We started off by learning how to use a searching line to distinguish the shape of the figure we were drawing. We built around that initial line to put emphasis on the movement of the figure. We were taught to overemphasize the motions of the figure and the weight of the stance. By going back to the roots of figure drawing, I feel that my skills have improved greatly.

Regardless of everything we learned, I feel that I still have a lot to improve on. I feel that figure drawing will never be perfect because there are endless details that can be added to your piece. A couple things in particular that I really struggled with were proportions and sizing. I kept making my figure way too small on the page, and when I tried to correct it later, my proportions were thrown off. I also struggled with capturing where the weight was distributed in the figure and portraying that in my drawing.
