Artist Statement

There is comfort in repetition and confidence in conformity. Despite the immense opportunity a blank canvas provides, the empty space can be overwhelming. This is why I choose to ground myself with one simple shape: the circle. The circle, a shape so seemingly simple, yet ever more profoundly complex, is the center of my work. Circles embody the essence of unity, of continuity, and of infinity. The circle is an unbroken line, symbolizing the cycle of life and the never-ending state of existence. Life goes on. No matter what challenges I meet, the circle serves as a reminder that I have to keep moving forward.

Surpassing the circle's simple nature, every brush stroke exposes more of the endless possibilities contained within the shape. Experimenting with layers of contrasting colors and textures further expands the possibilities of the circle and everything I can do with it. My work orbits around color as much as it does around circles. I have always been drawn to color, and I am inspired to pull, twist, and shape simple colors into combinations that push my circles out of the canvas and toward the viewer. When planning my paintings, I follow my instincts and let the freedom and thrill of design manipulate my brush strokes.

These patterns of circles are more meaningful than meets the eye. I have always loved to paint, but I stumbled upon this subject matter accidentally, when I was simply at a loss for what to create. The combination of color and shape was abstract enough to allow my creativity to start flowing again. I quickly fell in love with every step of the process and the results, but I am always searching for ways to expand my horizons by pushing my ideas and expectations. The choice to paint these shapes is an act of mindfulness and meditation; an escape from the hustle and bustle of my life. It allows me to explore my feelings and understand the interconnectedness of all things. Through the repetition of this simple form, I find a profound sense of peace and clarity, a small bubble from the chaos of the world.
